Goal: adapting to the wind, sea and life on the sailboat, learning the basic techniques of sailing and understanding the basics of nautical conduct at sea
Age: for all adults (aged 16 to 18 with parental written consent)
Previous knowledge: none required
Minimal prerequisites: swimming skills and readiness for physical activities
Acquired skills: basics of steering, sail handling, participation in daily routine work on the boat; sailed miles 120 NM (approx.)
Accommodation: simple accommodation onboard (availability on first come, first served basis, small fee) or mainland (your own organization and expense)
Sailing area: local waters of the island Murter
Duration: 5 days
Arrival: Saturday 6:00 pm
Start: Sunday 8:30 am
End: Thursday 7:00 pm
Participants who are accommodated onboard are required to check in on Saturday at 6:00 pm.Official start of the course is on Sunday at 8:30 am.Departure is scheduled for Thursday evening, unless you have selected one of the additional programs; in that case the departure is on Friday evening.
Daily plan:8:30 am – lessons
- anchoring and lunch break
5:00 pm – return to the marina and tidying up the boat
The daily plan is subject to change depending on the current weather conditions and the forecast.
All participants get a certificate as a recognition of participation and a logbook as a record of acquired skills, nautical miles sailed and weather conditions
Theoretical and practical part include:
- safety at sea and ship
- boat parts terminology
- basic points of sailing (close hauling, reaching, broad reaching, downwind)
- portside and starboard side, windward and leeward side
- what makes the boat move forward (Bernoulli’s law)
- positions of crew members
- sails and trimming of sails
- reefing of the sails
- sailing in course
- avoiding collisions at the sea
- turning the bow through the wind – tack
- turning the stern through the wind – gybe
- apparent wind
- meteorology – wind, compass rose
Sailing gloves, two pairs of non-slip shoes or sneakers, T-shirts and long sleeve shirts, short and long pants, strong sunscreen, a cap or a hat, sunglasses, towels, personal hygiene items, bathing suit, towels, mosquito repellent.If you are sailing during colder months or if you are accommodated onboard, please bring a warm waterproof jacket, pants and sleeping bag.Please remember to bring personal medications if required.Must have items onboard every day: adequate clothing and footwear, sunscreen, personal medications and other personal items, bottle of water, lunch packet.

The proposed handbook has been written by our part-time instructor and it is the perfect literature for our courses. The content and structure of the handbook are in line with our basic course, but it also serves as a lifelong reminder on sailing theory and practice.
