Sailing to South Dalmatia
Sailing to Korcula and Vis – sail and record 220 NM in your logbook! Can you resist this mile building sailing to South Dalmatia?
(Gre.korkyramelaina = dense forest of pine and jasmine)
According to the prestigious New York Times, the island of Korcula found itself on the 17th of the 52 places of the world to visit in 2016. The island has rich history, natural beauty and breathtaking landscape. The birthplace of Marco Polo. Need we say more?
Due to its long isolation from access of foreign guests, Vis kept its gentle appearance as an untouched Mediterranean island, and this makes it a unique island in the Adriatic. The town of Vis, or ancient Issa, was the first urban center in Croatia in the ancient times.
What makes this island so special, among other things, is its recent past as a Yugoslavian military base. Because of its location away from the mainland, Vis was ideal for hiding troops, weapons etc. Twenty kilometers of tunnels inside the island and many rooms form a perfect network that served to protect Tito and other Yugoslavian generals. There was a hospital underground, along with a warehouse for food and medicine. Since this was underground, it was even safe from nuclear weapons.
