RYA Competent Crew course sets firm foundations for all the other RYA courses and further development of sailing skills. From the first day of the course you will be the crew. Without you a yacht won’t be able to set sails. Also, you will spent all five days of the course aboard of a sailing yacht and you will learn about all aspects of life on a boat – from safety, sleeping, responsible use of water and electricity, storing and preparation of food, to showering.
Besides learning why and how a sailing yacht sails and lots of practice so it all sits well you will learn how to helm, handle sails and ropes, to tie knots and the yacht as well as how to anchor. You will also learn basics rules of the road and how weather affects sailing. How to make a lasso for catching cleats and buoys, what to do in case of man overboard situation and how to use rubber dinghy.
At RYA Day Skipper – advanced practical course you will learn about responsibilities of a skipper and how to communicate effectively with the crew. The course is very hands on and most of the course you will be in the role of skipper. Besides sailing, you will have to take care about all the other aspects of life aboard – food, water, electricity, fuel… After instructors’ explanation and demonstration you will take the helm while sailing out of a berth, docking, anchoring, buoy catching, helming, manoeuvring in close quarters as well as in the man overboard situation. You will be responsible for the safety of the crew and the boat. It will include as well as for navigation, following the weather forecast, keeping a good lookout. You will experience a night sail too.
You will learn in practice how to plan a cruise, use nautical maps. Also how to lead a ships’ log and how to determine you position with hand bearing compass and use of GPS. Besides that you will improve your knowledge on weather and how it’s affecting on sailing. You will learn basics of weather forecast.
On RYA Coastal Skipper course you will be the skipper of a sailing yacht from the first day. We will embark on more demanding routes and you will be by the helm during demanding manoeuvres. Instructor will take a role of a coach. He will point out some wrong habits, show you some tips and tricks. Your present knowledge and skills as well as endurance will be put to a real test during the course. Also, you will be put through a constant and strict assessment led by very high criteria.
You will learn how to prepare a yacht and the crew for demanding and long lasting offshore sailing. You will also learn how to plan that kind of sailing, with regard to the effect of larger weather systems as well as tidal influences. You will learn how to predict weather by the wind direction, shape of the clouds and barometer. Also, you will work on advanced use of GPS and VHF.
You will discover how to do ‘blind navigation’. Also how to act in case of fog at sea as well as how to follow the depth contour line in low visibility. You will learn how to use transits in navigation, leading lights and signs and clearing bearings. Also, you will learn how to lead the passage and pilot through a channel. You will enter and exit harbours during the night. You will learn how to find a position in the middle of the sea.

Price of the RYA own boat tuition includes: 6 days of sailing, instructor, course materials, personal safety equipment, RYA certificate for the level completed during the course, RYA log book.
Not included in the price of RYA own boat tuition: flights/other transportation to/from the base and parking costs, cost of the yacht, harbour fees, national parks entry fees, food and drink aboard and ashore, accommodation ashore.
