Maneuvering under engine – Advanced course

Maneuvering a sailing vessel under engine power is a skill that requires precise handling of the helm and propulsion system, an understanding of the effects of propeller wash and rudder wash, and an awareness of external factors such as wind and sea movement (currents)

The design characteristics of the vessel, such as hull shape and rudder position, as well as the characteristics of the propulsion system, including engine power and propeller type, will determine how the boat responds during a maneuver.

Preparation for maneuvering in a harbor or anchorage is of utmost importance, including checking and preparing equipment, as well as planning and communicating the maneuver with the crew. Practical exercises such as docking stern-to, side-to, and bow-in are crucial for building the confidence of both the helmsman and the crew, while practicing approaches to buoys and anchoring further helps in developing these skills.

In the event of a main rudder failure, it is essential to know how to use the emergency rudder to safely continue controlling the boat. Clear communication with the crew and frequent practice of all these maneuvers are key to safe navigation.

Content

GOAL:

The primary goals of the engine maneuvering course are to equip sailors with the essential skills, knowledge, and confidence needed to safely and effectively operate a sailboat under engine power in various conditions and situations. This includes understanding the impact of sailboat design and the propulsion system on maneuvering, preparing for maneuvers in harbors and anchorages, and acquiring practical skills through exercises in docking, anchoring, and handling situations involving main rudder failure. The aim is to ensure that sailors can confidently and precisely control their vessel under engine power, with maximum safety and efficiency.
