Becoming responsible for the crew and vessel

A skipper is a person who is in command of the vessel and the entire crew, and therefore has the knowledge, skills and authority necessary to take that responsibility.
The word is derived from the Dutch word Schipper – “ship”.

By participating in this unique program, you will master the knowledge and skills needed to perform duties of a skipper or the commander on board.

It is good to notice that the market demand for the profession skipper is constantly increasing.

Skipper!

Sailing as a crew member or as a skipper, there are two different things.

You will feel this difference when you first decide to take over the role of a skipper. A sense of responsibility and a completely different respect for the sea and the wind will not leave you later, but this is the first time something special. If you want to prepare for this difficult and responsible function, we recommend you our skipper preparation program.

If you have mastered the basics of sailing, navigation, spinnaker, you can turn on. Otherwise, the instructor has the right to return you to some of the lower courses. Not to answer your desire to be a skipper, but to better master the basics and move on again.

What’s waiting for you on this program?

None of us can sail so well that he could not do better. So we’ll sail and refine the techniques, dropping miles and miles … Tack, reef, and again ….

Topics covered in this program include: day-to-day navigation, meteorology, radio, entering and leaving in exceptional weather conditions day and night, sailing and sailing, emergency situations, safety equipment, use and safety procedures, self-managing sailboat, 24-hour sailing – organization of navigation, schedule of boarding on board – so-called. guards, the organization of the feeding of the crew, and what to do in case of some of the more serious damage to the ship.

You will learn how to look at a sailboat when renting, familiarizing with the installation and the engine, the most common problems and their removal. You will be familiar with the safety equipment and its use.

But first…

Familiarising with the boat and organisation of the crew

Distribution of duties studied throughout the course refers to the following:

  • sails
  • engine
  • kitchen
  • navigation
  • equipment

Prior to sailing off, all the private possessions of members of the crew have to be accommodated in such a way as not to obstruct either free movement inside the boat and onboard or reaching sailing equipment.

  • Sails have to be controlled and neatly arranged.
  • Engine control (oil, water, fuel, batteries)
  • Control of the navigation table (documents, crew list, maps, sea pilots, navigation equipment), VHF station, GPS
  • Kitchen – calculation of costs and provision of food in agreement with the navigator, which depends on duration of the trip. Boat budget is also the responsibility of the skipper.
  • Familiarising and control of boat equipment (ropes, spinnaker pole, pulleys, anchors…)
  • Watch schedule, if required
CONTENT

Theoretical and practical part includes::
