A person over the age of 16 has the right to apply for an examination to obtain the category B license. A person with that license can handle boats and yachts up to 30 GT for personal needs. A person holding a certificate of qualification for a Category B pilot vessel until he reaches the age of 18 shall not operate boats with the power of a propulsion device of more than 15 kW. Although the law does not require preparation for the exam, theoretical training is strongly recommended.

At ANA sailing school, our instructors will prepare you well for the exam. Some of the topics that will be dealt in this course are listed below.

Marine navigation

Navigation is a fundamental skill needed to safely manage a sailing boat. anyone intending to sail should be well-acquainted with the basics of navigation. The aim of the navigation is solving two main problems: determining your position and determining the course towards the desired destination.

Various types of navigation can be categorized in three main groups:

  • terrestrial navigation
  • celestial navigation (astronomical navigation)
  • electronic navigation.

Meteorology

Meteorology is the science which investigates weather and weather phenomena in the Earth’s atmosphere. Term weather refers to the atmosphere changes, from the sea level to the height of about 10 to 11 km above. This band of atmosphere is called troposphere. Troposphere contains about 90% of the total mass of the atmosphere as well as almost all of its moisture. The data required for monitoring the weather conditions are collected on daily basis in numerous meteorological stations worldwide. Some of those data are pressure, temperature, wind direction and strength, type and quantity of clouds, etc.

Maritime radiotelephony service

The maritime radiotelephony service is designated for communication between shore and boat stations, as well as between boat stations. It functions in compliance with the regulations of the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea and International Telecommunication Convention. In Croatia the service is run and organized by the Agency for Sea Waterways Maintenance from Split, via 3 shore radio stations. Stations are in Rijeka, Split and Dubrovnik. All the above-mentioned shore stations provide continuous watch on international emergency distress frequencies. Also maintain radio shore-to- ship and ship-to- ship communication.

General notions on engines

The engine on cruising sailing boats serves for docking or setting off from marines, navigation through straits (e.g. Proversa, Ždrelac)… Also, when due to lack of the wind (and time or nerves) we navigate towards our goal. Sailing boats are usually equipped with diesel engines, which use D2 fuel, or popularly called – oil. Diesel engines are more reliable and safer to use than gasoline engines.
