Sailing in middle Dalmatia

Sailing Middle Dalmatia takes us to Hvar and Vis. Each Island with its unique beauty

The island of Hvar – Pharos

The name of the island Hvar comes from the Greek word “Pharos” – which means lighthouse.

The island of Hvar – “king” among the Dalmatian islands, has been known since ancient times for its important strategic and nautical position, wealth of historical periods, cultural and natural monuments. The position of the island is such that it is located on all important sea routes of the eastern Adriatic, so due to its natural beauty, pleasant climate, protected bays and arable land, it was recognized by the first inhabitants from the earliest history – the Greeks and Illyrians.

Along the island of Hvar on the way to Vis, there are more than 20 islets and rocks of unique beauty – Pakleni Islands. These playful wooded islands, surrounded by azure blue sea, full of beautiful beaches bathed in the sun, hidden bays with a number of restaurants, are a real vacation for the heart and soul.

Hvar and Pakleni islands have a total of 2718 sunny hours per year. Considering that they have the highest number of sunny days in a year…. we can’t go wrong with this route!

The island of Vis

Due to its long isolation from access of foreign guests, Vis kept its gentle appearance as an untouched Mediterranean island, and this makes it a unique island in the Adriatic. The town of Vis, or ancient Issa, was the first urban center in Croatia in the ancient times.

What makes this island so special, among other things, is its recent past as a Yugoslavian military base. Because of its location away from the mainland, Vis was ideal for hiding troops, weapons etc. Twenty kilometers of tunnels inside the island and many rooms form a perfect network that served to protect Tito and other Yugoslavian generals. There was a hospital underground, along with a warehouse for food and medicine. Since this was underground, it was even safe from nuclear weapons.
