First Aid at Sea

At sea, professional medical assistance may not be immediately available. In an emergency, the skipper and crew must be able to assess the situation, provide essential first aid and call for medical advice or evacuation.

The RYA First Aid Course is a practical, one-day classroom course developed specifically for people who go afloat. It covers common medical emergencies onboard and the particular challenges of treating a casualty at sea.

 

Program

Intended for:

All skippers and crew members who care about safety onboard and want to be prepared for a medical emergency.

The course is particularly valuable for recreational sailors, professional skippers and candidates working towards RYA/MCA certificates that require a valid first aid qualification.

Pre-course experience:

None

PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE:

None

MINIMUM AGE:

18 years

Course format:

  • Classroom-based training with practical exercises.

Number of students:

  • Minimum 2 – maximum 12 participants.

  • Private tuition is also available on request.

Course content:

  • Assessing an emergency and prioritising immediate actions

  • Unconscious casualties and the recovery position in confined spaces

  • CPR using a training manikin, including the drowning protocol

  • Choking and breathing difficulties

  • Wounds, bleeding and the treatment of shock

  • Burns and sunburn

  • Head injuries and concussion

  • Fractures and suspected spinal injuries

  • Chest pain, angina and heart attacks

  • Cold-water shock and hypothermia

  • Seasickness and dehydration

  • Requesting medical advice or assistance by marine radio

  • Preparing a casualty for helicopter evacuation

  • Contents and use of an onboard first aid kit

Certification:

After completing the course, participants receive an RYA First Aid Certificate.

The certificate is valid for three years.

The course is MCA-approved and satisfies the first aid requirements for the RYA/MCA Coastal Skipper, Yachtmaster and Advanced Powerboat Certificates of Competence, as well as certain types of commercial work afloat.

Ability after the course:

After completing the course, you will be able to:

  • Recognise and assess common medical emergencies onboard
  • Provide immediate first aid until professional assistance arrives
  • Perform CPR and place a casualty in the recovery position
  • Treat wounds, burns, shock, hypothermia and other common conditions
  • Request medical advice or emergency assistance by marine radio
  • Respond more confidently and effectively to an emergency at sea

One day – 8 hours
